Kidney Disease in Malaysia: A Growing Concern

Kidney disease has become a significant public health issue in Malaysia, primarily driven by diabetes and hypertension. As of 2023, approximately 50,000 individuals with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) underwent dialysis, with over 10,000 new patients initiating treatment annually. This number is expected to double by 2040, leading to an estimated healthcare cost of RM3.2 billion.

The prevalence of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) in Malaysia has risen dramatically. In 2024, it was reported that at least 15.5% of the Malaysian population, equating to over 5 million people, are living with CKD. Alarmingly, only 5% of them are aware of their condition.
